Dr. Cleveland grew up in Gulfport, MS and attended Tulane University, where he graduated with an English degree as well as completing the necessary pre-med coursework.  He attended Tulane University School of Medicine and subsequently completed a four-year residency in Internal Medicine. He practiced Internal Medicine primarily in Pensacola, FL at the beginning of his medical career up until 1990.  At that time, he completed a two-year fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at East Carolina School of Medicine under the guidance of Dr. Jim Metzger.  He then returned to Pensacola to start his own allergy and immunology practice.  He is on the active staff of Sacred Heart Hospital and Baptist Hospital and on the courtesy staff at West Florida Hospital. He is a past Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at Sacred Heart Hospital and has been a member of its governing executive committee. Dr. Cleveland teaches medical students through his role as Clinical Assistant Professor of the Florida State University School of Medicine. He is on the speaker bureau of several pharmaceutical companies and trains other physicians in the use of the latest allergy and asthma medicines. In evaluating his patients, Dr. Cleveland personally takes a comprehensive history to determine the unique presentation of symptoms, complicating factors and the triggers which might be causing problems. By understanding  the background of why patients are having symptoms, an individual treatment plan can be formed. By targeting the cause of the problem, focused therapy means better outcomes. He tries to use as little medication as possible to control allergy and asthma. Dr. Cleveland has served as president of the Northwest Florida region of the American Lung Association.  From its beginning in 2003, Dr. Cleveland has been the chief medical officer at the Sacred Heart Hospital’s Asthma Camp for children. This is a weekend camp where young children learn how to manage their asthma while also having a good time.
